  1. Course Description:

DIGD-405-1 (Formerly D629) 1-5-3/3 Credits/Digital Video Design and Production

This course exposes students to the principles of digital-video design and production.  Students will become versed in non-linear, video-editing software as a means to create effective digital-video presentations. A series of projects develop essential skill sets, such as storyboarding, video capture, editing and compositing. A final, student-defined project will demonstrate mastery of the conceptual and technical aspects of digital-video design and production.

  1. Course Objectives:
  2. Write descriptive treatments and pitch your ideas to a group
  3. Plan a Successful Shoot based on a shooting script and detailed pre-production plan.
  4. Write a Script and Develop a Story
  5. Understand a Budget Production
  6. Learn to Shoot a Professional Camera, capture Audio and Footage
  7. Work on a team in various roles including a Producer and Crew

What NOT to do:

  1. Shoot just enough footage to edit. It will never be enough and will look that way in the final edit.
  2. Create videos with inside jokes
  3. Use foul language in your videos. This is usually a crutch for a lack of content.
  4. Miss deadlines.
  5. Lazy shooting. If you need a tripod, go get one.
  6. Shoot in Standard def. All projects MUST be high def.
  1. Course Process Outcomes:

  1. Attendance:

Unless otherwise noted by the instructors, students are expected to report to class on time, whether the scheduled class is a lecture, open lab, or instructor meeting. Students who sign up for this class have made a commitment and are expected to be on time and must make arrangements to do so. Students exhibiting a pattern of lateness will be subject to losing one final grade level (A to A-, B to B-, etc.) per un-cleared lateness.  Lateness is defined as reporting to the classroom any time after the scheduled time for class. Students missing more than two classes in a semester without clearing absences with their teams and the instructor prior to the absence will be subject to losing one final grade level per un-cleared absence. Attendance issues will likely have an effect on your team contribution grade.

  1. Academic Honesty and Integrity Policy:

In keeping with the college’s policy on academic honesty, students will be expected to perform according to the standards explained under “Academic Policies” in the Student Handbook, which can be found at http:// www.philau.edu/student-handbook/.

In addition to the policies stated in the Student Handbook, it is assumed you will conduct yourselves in a professional manner:

  1. Show respect and tolerance for the opinions of other class members; answer questions regarding your opinion in a non-defensive manner; practice good listening skills.
  2. Be a good team member; require others to do the same.
  3. Concern yourself with issues of importance, not personalities.
  4. Remember the Prime Directive: Innovate; Challenge assumptions; Take responsibility for your own (and your colleagues’) development.
  5. You are here to give as much as to receive. Your colleagues” development is (at least in part) your responsibility.
  6. Set a personal standard that requires academic honesty: plagiarism or cheating, per policy, may result in dismissal from the program.
